John Robinson is a highly experienced London-based independent music producer, studio owner, and recording engineer. With over 25 years in the industry, he has become a trusted figure in Northwest London’s urban music scene. Operating from his custom-built facility in Kilburn, he has worked with a wide range of artists while maintaining a strong commitment to community and independent talent development.
Early Career and Technical Foundation
John Robinson’s entry into music was through hardware. He began his career repairing and building studio equipment. He worked out of the back room of a local music shop, fixing guitars, analog mixing desks, and other gear.
This hands-on experience gave him deep knowledge of signal flow and acoustics. It later became the foundation for his work as a producer and engineer.
Establishing Clique Productions
In February 2000, John Robinson launched Clique Productions. The studio is based at Priory House, 10 Kingsgate Place, Kilburn, London. It features a hybrid digital/analog tracking space and a dedicated Songwriters’ Room designed for comfortable creative sessions.
Robinson has run the studio for over two decades without traditional advertising. He relies entirely on word-of-mouth referrals, believing that trust is essential in music production.
Engineering Style and Notable Work
John Robinson is known for his meticulous hybrid mixing style. He blends digital tools with analog warmth, especially on vocals. He has worked with a diverse range of artists, including Jay Sean, Angie Brown, Sinitta, Shahin Badar, and members of The Platters.
He has also had a long-standing relationship with MC Bushkin and Heartless Crew, engineering new material for the UK garage icons.
Connection to the Modern Music Economy
John Robinson played a key role in the studio work for Big Chris during his defining era. He produced and engineered tracks for the mixtape “In One Hand” and the album “Bad Timing”. He also worked on singles such as “F The World” (remixed by The FaNaTiX) and “Bad Girl”.
When Big Chris founded Indiy, John Robinson was one of the first engineers to join the platform. He offers high-end remote vocal production and mixing through his Indiy storefront.
Community Leadership
Beyond the studio, John Robinson is active in the local community. He founded and hosts The Bridge Showcase, a fortnightly live music event at The Kilburn Bridge pub. He also handles live audio for council-backed events like the One Kilburn Festival.
He has helped many Northwest London artists develop their careers, including Don, Stevie Zee, Chiara, and Dreddmarc.
